Desmond and Ms. Hawking

Ms. Hawking, LOST Episode 3×08, Flashes Before Your Eyes

Here’s the scene from Season 3, in the episode where Ms. Hawking — the strange character who appeared, wearing a hood and a cape, at the end of this week’s episode The Lie — made her one and only previous appearance on LOST:

There’s more that happens after that. I wanted to get a clip that had the rest, but the only one I could find was this odd one which is hard to hear and appears to have been dubbed into some other language and then back into English. It was good enough, though, to bring back the memory of having seen it before.

(Editing to add: Please see the next post (above) for a higher-quality clip that contains Ms. Hawking’s entire scene from Season 3 as well as her scene at the end of “The Lie”)
———————

I remember that when I originally saw this scene, two years ago, it seemed completely incomprehensible and bizarre. But in the context of the even more bizarre things that have happened on the show since then — Desmond’s visions, the return of the undead, the donkey wheel, the Island skipping through time — it doesn’t seem quite as outlandish now. Relatively speaking, that is.

I have so much catching up to do! [Edited to remove excess links — Ms T]

I recognized her as soon as she turned around in the chapel - that scene in season 3 with Desmond stayed with me - it was so eerie. Now that it appears she is working with Ben (or is Ben working FOR her?) it makes for a lot of interesting paths the writers can take.

I agree, it’s hard to tell if Ben is working with — or for — her. She might be just a technician, calculating space-time coordinates for Ben to use — except that she has such a commanding air about her, and Ben sounds so deferential when he talks to her.

Yes, that’s it exactly. The way Ben reacted to her and the way she spoke to him, certainly felt like she was the one in charge. Esp. when she said that about the 70 days.

    I agree.

I hope she becomes a regular character — and it looks like she will be. The actress playing her has such an interesting way of saying her lines. Very strong and very theatrical. I wonder if she has performed on the stage.

I cannot believe that nobody remember one more time when Ms Hawking appeared on the island,… I can’t remember the season and chapter, grrrr! And no wiki has this information.

I know I didnt dream it!!

I don’t remember it — heh, I didn’t even remember that she had been on the show at *all* — but I’ll see if I can find out something.

I found a couple of things! Some people think that Ms. Hawking was also Isabel, the Sheriff for the Others. But, apparently not — they only look similar.

But she did have another, actual appearance on the show (though not on the Island itself) — in a photograph on the desk of Brother Campbell, the monk who introduced Desmond to Penny!
