5×03 Jughead — almost-live blogging

The Time Tunnel

Blogging my reactions, during the commercial breaks:

9:07. I hope Charlotte will recover from her time-travel sickness and be ok.

9:16. Why do the Others speak Latin? Did they go to Others Prep School?

9:28. “He’s one of my people.” Ha ha. Was Locke the leader of the Others throughout all of time?

So far, this is not shaping up to be one of my favorite episodes.

9:39. I liked this segment a lot better! Learned many interesting things. Widmore was Faraday’s benefactor! Wow. And there was an atomic bomb on the Island — that would explain a lot — the strange Island sickness is probably due to the bomb’s radiation. The presence of the bomb might even account for the origin of the time shifts themselves.

I like Faraday and Charlotte as a couple — nice and low-drama. Sawyer and Juliette are starting to have some good chemistry too. But is there anyone who does not have good chemistry with Sawyer?

9:51. That young Other is Charles Widmore! Oooh, that gave me chills up my spine! I’m really liking this episode now.

10:01. Desmond and Penny named their baby Charlie! Awww.

Miles: “I’m fine too.” Ha ha.

Shame about Charlotte. I’m still hoping for a magical cure.

I was very impressed with the performance of Jeremy Davies (Faraday), who really came into his own tonight. Last week was Jorge Garcia’s chance to shine. This week was Davies’.

Overall impression of this episode: It got off to a slow start, but we got one fantastic reveal — the young Charles Widmore — and one huge step forward in understanding the mythology of the Island — the presence of the leaking atomic bomb.

Oh, a weird bit of synchronicity — My TV is still on, and the beginning of “Life on Mars” is playing in the background as I finish writing this, and someone on that show just said “Archie and Jughead.” Jughead!

Oh wow. This could have been taped from me as we watched the show tonight…right down to the “awww” over Baby Charlie. *sniff*

The Widmore thing really got me, too. And I seriously was thinking as I watched Jeremy Davies that he is really a good actor, and it’s such a different type of character than we usually get on TV. I like that he has this softspoken, warm manner and yet he’s got all of these scary secrets…

I agree. Plus I love the way he scrunches up his face. His face is so expressive, that I feel like I can see inside him to see what he is thinking and feeling (well, except for those scary secrets ;) ). By the time he told Charlotte that he loved her, I thought that was superfluous — he didn’t need to say it in words, because the expression on his face had already said it so strongly many times over.

Yes, he was wearing a ton of eyeliner! I was wondering about that too. It was hardly a common look for men in 1954! ;) Actually, he always wears it no matter what time period he pops up in. Maybe it’s an Other thing???

Wow. I finally had a chance to watch ‘Jughead’ on ABC’s website. They have a fantastic new video player that is completely smooth - no bumps and freezes like with CBS’s.

On to the eppy :) I agree with you about the beginning being kind of slow and not too interesting.

We certainly did get some interesting insights into Daniel’s life. I wonder who that girls was that was holding the gun to his head — could that be his mother??

I wonder if Desmond and Penny named their little boy Charlie because of how Charlie saved Desmond’s life.

Overall, this episode didn’t seem to hold quite so much punch as last weeks twosome, but I still enjoyed it.

Good to know about the ABC player — I’m not sure, but I may not be home in time this week to watch it on TV.

I bet you’re right about the girl with the gun being Daniel’s mother. I originally thought she might be a future girlfriend, but in terms of her age, it makes more sense that she would be his mother (assuming she’s not roving through time herself). There’s something kind of creepy about that!

Yes, I would agree with the word creepy - seeing your mother long before you were born. Kind of similar to Locke meeting Widmore two years before Locke was born.

Something I’d forgotten about - the leaking bomb. They left before Daniel could do anything about fixing it. I’m wondering if the girl holding the gun to his head remembers what he said, and told Alpert what to do to fix it? I’m also wondering if that bomb was what was buried deep in the island that the Dharma people were tunneling towards in Episode 2 (I think.)

  7. msterrion 31 Jan 2009 at 6:43 pm edit this

My guess is that the leaking bomb will be very significant. What the Dharma people were digging towards was the “donkey wheel” (the ice-covered thing that Ben was turning last year). You could see the wheel on the Dharma guy’s blueprint. That’s where the time-traveling energy seems to be coming from.

I think the bomb is related to that somehow — I think it’s been buried and leaking into the island for all these years — giving people radiation sickness, maybe killing off the pregnant women too. And maybe responsible for the energy that moves things around in time.

Even if that theory is right, though, or partially right, there was still something strange about the Island long before the bomb got there, so *all* the weirdness can’t be traced back to the bomb — there’s that slave ship in the middle of the Island, which probably got there a century before. And that’s pretty odd — how many wrecked ships do you find that far inland?

Unless that was a time-travel thing too. Maybe the ship got to the Island the same way the polar bears did??

    So many questions … ;)

Yes, so many questions. It will be interesting to see what answers we actually get, and how many new questions arise from those answers. :D
