Almost-live blogging Episode 5×06 “316″

316

Blogging during commercials …

9:06 They’re back on the Island. I hope Jack is happy now! That looked a lot like a dream sequence, but apparently it wasn’t.

I like the Lamppost Dharma station in the church basement. I wonder if it doubles as an AA meeting place.

9:14 Now THAT was exciting! Now we’re getting somewhere! Explanations of what the Island does! Specific plans to go back! Flight 316 — so that’s what the title means!

I loved Fionnula Flanagan in this scene. She has such great presence. She got the best lines too. In response to Jack’s asking if Ben was telling the truth: “Probably not.” And then to Jack, “Let’s pay attention, yes?” And to Desmond, “But I am helping, dear.” All delivered in that wonderful accent.

9:29 A lot happened! Again, it had the quality of a dream sequence, but I think it was all meant to be real.

Locke’s suicide note. Locke as proxy for Jack’s dad-in-a-box on the original flight. Eloise Hawking: “That’s why it’s called a leap of faith, Jack.” But leaps of faith are exactly what Jack most resists. Ben’s relating the story of the Apostle.

Jack drinking in an (airport?) bar — deja vu. A rabbit! Jack’s grandfather! (He looks too young, though.) “The pretty one with the freckles.”

What’s the significance of the shoes? Must relate to the internet chatter about why Jack’s father wears white sneakers on the Island.

Kate without Aaron — what happened to him? Kiss!

9:38 The shoes explained. Ben’s bloody face. Jack in the butcher shop, in the room with the carcasses — creepy. The coffin! Creepier still. Jack opens it. Anyone else think that Locke was going to jump up and grab Jack? Ewww, he put the shoes on Locke. Jack: “This is even crazier than you are.”

9:51 Ajira Airways! Hurley! With a guitar case — that explains why he had one in the first scene. But what is he doing there? Wasn’t he in jail? Didn’t he want to have nothing to do with going back? Nice of him, though, to buy out a whole block of seats to save the lives of all those potential passengers.

And Sayid! I thought he didn’t want to come either. Who is that with him?

Ben, with his face all messed up, and no one even seems to notice.

Why didn’t Kate and Jack go to the airport together?

Frank: “We’re not going to Guam, are we?”

10:01 “How can you read?” “My mother taught me.”

The note … “I wish you had believed me.” Even after death, Locke is still nagging Jack for not being a believer. Hurley blindfolded! Good idea.

The flash took them down! Well, I’m glad for that. Didn’t relish having to watch another plane crash.

Now we’ve come full circle. The lagoon (wow, it’s so beautiful in Hawaii!). Hurley. Kate.

The Dharma van! All nice and shiny! That means they’re back in the past … Dharma guy with a gun …it’s Jin!

Wow, that was exciting. Great episode. My favorite so far this season by a mile. Well, except maybe for “The Lie,” just because the acting in that one was so good. But this was definitely the best as far as the story goes.

The LOST I knew and loved is back.

I agree totally, this was a really good episode. I loved the humor–the “My mother taught me” and the “Probably not” lines made me sporfle. And this is a milestone, I’m actually liking Jack again. But I’m wondering what’s going to happen with the whole Jack/Kate/Sawyer thing now that they’re back. That could certainly get complicated. Eep.

I was saying in my blog that I’m a little bit hazy on why they have to recreate the plane crash in order to get back–I mean, how does anyone get there in the first place, if they have to recreate the way they got there every time they go back? *head explodes*

I have NO idea why they had to recreate the conditions of the original crash. Nada. Zilch. Not an inkling of a clue. ;)

Is Sawyer in the same time period as Jack/Kate/Hurley/Jin? I guess he must be, because he and Jin had that little reunion last week. Well, I guess it’s back to the old love triangle, then. Unless they’re too busy doing the Island’s bidding.

Jack is more likable when he’s not trying to be the leader.

    Good, good episode!

It was a good episode except for the Jack/Kate scene. I think it was the worst scene in the whole history of Lost. That was bad television. No heartwarming words or even a small glimmer of anything in each others eyes before she kisses him and they tear their clothes off??? Come on. Now how is the audience suppose to sympathize with Kate if they keep this stupid love triangle going~she’s going just look like a slut. Sawyer run!!!

@megryansmom, that’s a great point. I thought Ben was just making an off-the-cuff joke, which struck me as very funny at the time, but once you remember that he didn’t have a mother when he was growing up, that puts a new weird and creepy slant on it.

@karen, the worst scene in the *whole* history of Lost? I’d have to say that would be when Nikki and Paulo were buried. Seriously, I like the love triangle. My only complaint is that the chemistry between Kate and Sawyer is so much stronger than the chemistry between Kate and Jack, that it takes some of the drama out of it — there would have been more tension and suspense if the couplings were more evenly matched.

I suspect that has to do with the actors, not with the writing. I think that the writers really do want to put Kate and Jack together at the end. But chemistry is what it is, and you can’t fake it. Well, maybe if Lilly and Fox were better actors, they *could* fake it more. ;)

I bet you could easily watch each episode three or four times, and still see something new in it each time.

I agree — I love the way the episodes interlink with each other. That’s a big part of what makes this show so special.

There are going to be 17 episodes total this season, and the season is supposed to end sometime in May. Then next season will definitely be the last one. I’m going to miss it when it’s over!

Just got finished watching it. Wow! I agree that this was a good one. My favorite scene was at the very end when the Dharma van drove up and the Jin reveal! I wonder where Sun, etc are?

I think Sayid was in handcuffs - he probably beat Ben up and got arrested. That was to resemble Kate being under arrest on the first trip.

I’m going to have to go look on youtube for the previews

I liked the ending too. I wasn’t expecting Jin! I wonder if Sun, etc. landed in a different time.

Interesting idea that Sayid, in handcuffs, replicated Kate being in handcuffs. That sounds right.

I hope Sayid was the one who beat up Ben — because that would probably mean that Ben didn’t kill Penny.

But another alternative is that Sayid turned himself in to the police (for the murders of the guy who was watching Hurley and the other guy who died in the dishwasher) in order to get Hurley out of jail. Though that still wouldn’t explain *why* Sayid and Hurley both decided to go to the Island, when they had been so dead set against it a few days before.

Maybe Charlie or one of the other ghosts talked them into it?

You noticed Hurley had a guitar case with him right? So, the idea of Charlie having gotten in contact with at the very least Hurley seems quite plausible. I also like the idea that maybe Sayid turned himself in - of course that doesn’t explain why they’d be taking him to Guam .. unless he did one of his hits for Ben in Guam??

  9. msterrion 20 Feb 2009 at 10:47 pm edit this

Oh, yeah, that could be CHARLIE’S guitar case! That’s creepy and weird … and it does make a lot of sense. I had been wondering why Hurley was carrying a guitar case, since I don’t think we’ve ever seen him play an instrument.

Unless he just picked it up somewhere, in order to be more like Charlie was on Flight 815, in order to try to replicate the original conditions. (But how would he know that they were supposed to do that?)

Interesting idea about Sayid. I had thought he had somehow arranged (for some unknown reason) to be on the flight, but considering that he was in handcuffs, it makes more that sense that he was taken there, like you said. I’m sure there is some suitably complicated explanation. ;)

I think the show is going to HAVE to give specific answers to all the questons it raised in this episode, because the questions are so specific — unusually so.
