Hurley and Miles talk about time travel

Here are the clips of the scenes from last night’s Whatever Happened, Happened where Hurley and Miles argue about time travel, in case you’d like to see them again.

There’s some wonderful dialogue here, as Hurley and Miles act out the thoughts of every LOST fan who has ever passionately defended a favorite theory about the show — or who has ever gotten a headache from trying to figure it all out and running into too many paradoxes:

Jorge Garcia and Ken Leung are such talented comic actors. We’re lucky to have them on the show!

Almost-live blogging Episode 5×06 “316″

316

Blogging during commercials …

9:06 They’re back on the Island. I hope Jack is happy now! That looked a lot like a dream sequence, but apparently it wasn’t.

I like the Lamppost Dharma station in the church basement. I wonder if it doubles as an AA meeting place.

9:14 Now THAT was exciting! Now we’re getting somewhere! Explanations of what the Island does! Specific plans to go back! Flight 316 — so that’s what the title means!

I loved Fionnula Flanagan in this scene. She has such great presence. She got the best lines too. In response to Jack’s asking if Ben was telling the truth: “Probably not.” And then to Jack, “Let’s pay attention, yes?” And to Desmond, “But I am helping, dear.” All delivered in that wonderful accent.

9:29 A lot happened! Again, it had the quality of a dream sequence, but I think it was all meant to be real.

Locke’s suicide note. Locke as proxy for Jack’s dad-in-a-box on the original flight. Eloise Hawking: “That’s why it’s called a leap of faith, Jack.” But leaps of faith are exactly what Jack most resists. Ben’s relating the story of the Apostle.

Jack drinking in an (airport?) bar — deja vu. A rabbit! Jack’s grandfather! (He looks too young, though.) “The pretty one with the freckles.”

What’s the significance of the shoes? Must relate to the internet chatter about why Jack’s father wears white sneakers on the Island.

Kate without Aaron — what happened to him? Kiss!

9:38 The shoes explained. Ben’s bloody face. Jack in the butcher shop, in the room with the carcasses — creepy. The coffin! Creepier still. Jack opens it. Anyone else think that Locke was going to jump up and grab Jack? Ewww, he put the shoes on Locke. Jack: “This is even crazier than you are.”

9:51 Ajira Airways! Hurley! With a guitar case — that explains why he had one in the first scene. But what is he doing there? Wasn’t he in jail? Didn’t he want to have nothing to do with going back? Nice of him, though, to buy out a whole block of seats to save the lives of all those potential passengers.

And Sayid! I thought he didn’t want to come either. Who is that with him?

Ben, with his face all messed up, and no one even seems to notice.

Why didn’t Kate and Jack go to the airport together?

Frank: “We’re not going to Guam, are we?”

10:01 “How can you read?” “My mother taught me.”

The note … “I wish you had believed me.” Even after death, Locke is still nagging Jack for not being a believer. Hurley blindfolded! Good idea.

The flash took them down! Well, I’m glad for that. Didn’t relish having to watch another plane crash.

Now we’ve come full circle. The lagoon (wow, it’s so beautiful in Hawaii!). Hurley. Kate.

The Dharma van! All nice and shiny! That means they’re back in the past … Dharma guy with a gun …it’s Jin!

Wow, that was exciting. Great episode. My favorite so far this season by a mile. Well, except maybe for “The Lie,” just because the acting in that one was so good. But this was definitely the best as far as the story goes.

The LOST I knew and loved is back.

Official ABC video podcast — time travel, physics, and God

Daniel Faraday with long hair

This podcast focuses on Jeremy Davies and his character Daniel Faraday, with a few additional comments from Jorge Garcia (Hurley) and Elizabeth Mitchell (Juliet). They all talk about time travel, and the podcast also shows short clips from earlier in this season, and from last season’s The Constant, that give a quick review of what’s been said in the show about time travel so far.

These official podcasts are essentially promos for the upcoming episodes, so “316,” the next episode, will almost certainly be about time travel. Maybe the episode will even give us some hints as to how time travel works. They can’t tell us everything though. It’s too early for that — there’s still more than a season and a half left to go, and I’m sure they want to keep us mystified for as long as possible.

On the podcast, Davies talks about “rogue physicists” who go beyond Newtonian physics. He says,

You get into areas that demand a language that is closer to the territories of emotion and spirituality and God.

Clear as mud?

As fuzzy as that statement may be, I still have a feeling that it’s pointing to something that is central to what the show is about. After all, one of the show’s major themes is the conflict between faith and science (usually personified by Locke and Jack, respectively). Will the show’s overall resolution hinge on resolving that conflict by bringing faith and science together?

If you want to see any of the previous podcasts, go to the archive on ABC.com, which has video podcasts (and also audio podcasts, which have different material) going back to February 2008.

Screenshot, from the podcast, of Faraday in the past with long hair (but still wearing a tie!), is from The Constant, Episode 4×05 (c) ABC

Another sneak peek — Hurley-centric episode!

Hurley

Producers/writers Damon and Carlton sent another email today to the Dharma Special Access Group list. They write,

In less than a week, LOST season 5 premieres! You’re hopefully excited. We’re heavily medicating ourselves to overcome our anxiety.

On premiere night there will be a clip show, followed by the first two episodes. These were written as separate episodes, Damon and Carlton say, not as a two-hour long single episode, that just happen to have been scheduled to be shown together on the same night.

They write, in the email,

Episode one entitled “Because You Left” picks up where the finale left off, and the second episode “The Lie” is a Hurley-centric episode. Honestly, we’re very excited for you to see them.

Speaking of the Hurley episode, this week we’ve got a special sneak peak [sic] at a scene from that episode just for you.

Here it is:

You can also watch it at the Dharma Special Access site, where the password for this week is bharosa. (Bharosa is, in the words of a press release I found via google, the name of “a leading provider of fraud prevention and strong authentication security solutions.” Could that be a clue?)

Also at the Dharma Special Access site is another short video which displays the photos of the lead actors from a recent photo shoot, accompanied by wonderful music written by LOST’s resident composer, Michael Giacchino (the music was originally written for Carlton and Damon’s 2008 Comic-Con appearance.)

Enjoy!

More bad fathers — looking for a pattern — part 2 (Hurley’s father)

Hurley’s dad (Cheech Marin) coming back into his life (Season 3, episode 10)

The story of Hurley’s father, who is played by Cheech Marin of Cheech and Chong, fits very well into the theory of the bad fathers. Hurley’s father deserted his family for 17 years, returning only when Hurley won the lottery.

My theory is that what the bad fathers take away from their children, the Island gives back. And it holds true here.

Remember the scene from Season 3 where Hurley finds an old VW bus on the Island, and gets behind the wheel? Here’s the clip (it’s from the Tricia Tanaka is Dead episode):

It’s significant that when Hurley and Charlie safely reach the bottom of the hill, the radio in the VW bus suddenly starts playing Shambala, the same song that the radio was playing when Hurley’s father left him. (A detail, by the way, that I picked up while browsing through the excellent resource Lostpedia.)

Hurley, laughing ecstatically at the end of the scene, seems to have overcome not only the pain of his father’s desertion, but also, at least for the moment, the curse of the numbers.

The fathers take away, and the Island restores — and then the Island gives even more.

Next: Charles Widmore — the baddest father of them all?

What are the LOST actors up to?

What are the cast members of LOST up to these days? That is, aside from being in Hawaii to shoot Season 5?

Josh Holloway (Sawyer) is expecting his first child.

Sonya Walger (Penny) got a role as the lead actress in the upcoming TV science-fiction drama Flash Forward, a show some are calling a potential successor to LOST.

Lance Reddick (Abaddon) made an indie film called Tennessee with Mariah Carey (whose acting he praised). The film was shown at the Tribeca Film Festival this past April, and played in L.A. this month for just one week in order to qualify for Oscar consideration. The general release date has been moved around — it’s now scheduled to open in March 2009.

Yunjin Kim (Sun) and Daniel Dae Kim (Jin) were together named # 17 in Entertainment Weekly’s 25 Entertainers of the Year.

Jorge Garcia (Hurley) has posted on his blog a picture of himself in a bubble bath.

Will Matthew Abaddon return to Lost?

Last night, I watched the premiere of J.J. Abrams’ new show, Fringe. I was surprised and delighted to see Lance Reddick appear. He started on LOST last season as the deliciously creepy Matthew Abaddon — though I still think of him as Lt. Daniels from The Wire.

My initial delight gave way to a twinge of anxiety. If Reddick is appearing in what looks like a fairly major role in Fringe, will he be able to return to LOST? Can someone be in two shows at once? I loved the Abaddon character last season, even if his appearance was little more than a cameo, and I was hoping the character would be developed more — a lot more.

Here he is with Hurley, in a great scene from the first show of last season:

Well, I looked around, and I found an interview that Reddick gave last month, where he says that he will be returning to LOST. Whew!

Q: Do you think it’s going to be a challenge arranging your schedule so that you can make it back to Hawaii ? When can fans expect you to return to LOST?

A: As with all things on LOST, I don’t know. I only know that I am going back. But I don’t know when or for how many episodes.

On The Wire, Reddick showed he was a subtle actor with a lot of depth. I hope he is on LOST enough, this upcoming season, to do his character justice.

Jorge Takes a Trip

Jorge Garcia, who plays Hurley on the show, has a blog. He’s traveling through Ireland, and like many tourists, he enjoys writing about what it’s like to drive on unfamiliar roads, about the interesting things he sees while sightseeing — and about the “oddly pleasant” sensation of plucking a hair out of his nose. Okay, maybe this isn’t quite your average tourist blog:

I noticed I had a hair in my face. So as I started to brush it away I could feel it was coming from my nostril. Somehow I inhaled a rogue hair into my nose. And once I realized it, my first thought was to run to a mirror to check it out. And my second thought was to get the camera.

Which he does. Check it out.
